Oleksandr Pankieiev

Director of the Kule Folklore Centre and Associate Professor and Kule Chair of Ukrainian Ethnography in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta. Previously he served as editor-in-chief of the Forum for Ukrainian Studies at CIUS. His research focuses on various approaches to ethnography, including video ethnography, the history of Steppe Ukraine, Ukrainian Canadian diaspora, digital folklore, media studies, and propaganda. Pankieiev's recent publications include the article “Deconstructing narratives of belonging and otherness among Steppe Ukraine villagers: Place, space, language, and historical consciousness” (2026) and the introduction to the collected volume Narratives of the Russo-Ukrainian War: A Look Within and Without (2025), which he edited and which has been translated into Spanish. He also co-directed the 2025 documentary film Horizons of Belonging.
