Dominique Arel

Dominique Arel is a Professor of Political Science and Chair of Ukrainian Studies at University of Ottawa. He is the author of Ukraine’s Unnamed War: Before the Russian Invasion of 2022 (Cambridge University Press, 2023), co-written with Jesse Driscoll, UC San Diego. He has written extensively on language and regional politics in Ukraine, including in The Battle for Ukrainian (Harvard, 2017). His article, “Jerry Hough, Scholar and Entrepreneur” (Kritika, 2021) is an homage to the late Sovietologist and his impact on a generation of graduate students. Since 2005 he has organized the Annual Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine at the University of Ottawa, and since 1998 the Annual World Convention of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), at Columbia University.
